![]() ![]() I also knew the while I could probably do mythTV on it, I wanted the computer to control the TV not just the input to the TV. I snagged it, and I knew no fancy distribution should grace this box. I only had one spare machine, an old PII-350 that a friend had been throwing out. I instantly thought this is a job for LINUX! ![]() Reading it, I found the section on the serial commands to send to the tv to control it. In geek heaven I hunted on LG's website for a manual ( Local Copy). Poking around I noticed it had both an RGB in dsub15 port and a 9pin RS232 port. So we got it home and had dinner while I started pulling coax for Cable. So woot I found my "open-Box" 37" (about 1m diagonal) TV. Usually they are much cheaper than the off-the-shelf models. These are TV's that have been returned for one reason or another. An awe inspiring selection made me briefly think that I should have researched it first to find the best, but screw it! I was there with money to burn! My wife hunted around and found the "open-box" TV's. So I took my wife to Best Buy and we looked at TV's. So I got a wild-hair one day to buy a new tv. Summary: I wrote a web page to control the LG 37LC7D TV via it's RS232 Port. LGTV.php - Main classĬonfiguration and setup is simple.Making an LG TV Controller from a Linux box. It makes use of the PHP serial class, which I’ve included in the tarball. If you want to try it out you can download it. It works, although it needs some tidying up. I installed apache2 and php on the SheevaPlug and set about building a test class to control it. The serial port settings are nothing special, standard console settings Baud rate : 9600 bps The USB Serial port uses the PL2303 so is detected without issue. Luckily I’d already got a SheevaPlug for my birthday in February, so I was just a case of connecting this to the TV with a USB to RS232 device and a Null modem adapter or and serial cable. As I said the documentation is there but control needed to be very simple. Straight away I decided to get working on some serial port control interface. I was also intrigued to get copies of both the GPL and LGPL licences with the documentation. So that’s put LG in my good books and I hope they continue to supply this information. Look at Sony with their Control-S / Control-L protocols that they didn’t really want you to use. LG don’t hide what this port is for, in fact the protocol and port settings are in the user manual. So far the TV has worked perfectly and has the added bonus of a serial port. If I’m honest I didn’t really spend much time thinking about which TV to pick, I went for the LG32LD350.
